Bio

Alberto Pinto pursued his studies in Mathematics and Physics at the Università degli Studi di Milano, where he received a PhD in Computer Science, focusing on digital signal processing, perceptual audio coding and music information retrieval.

He also graduated in Organ and Organ Composition at the "G. Verdi" Conservatory of Music of Milan and he received the "Diplôme de Concert avec Mention" in Organ and Improvisation from the Haute école de Musique de Genève, Switzerland, studying with Alessio Corti.

He worked as a researcher in musical informatics and acoustics at the University of Milan and the University of Utrecht (Netherlands) and, since 2006, he has been Visiting Scholar at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) Stanford University, CA (USA).

Since 2008, he teaches university courses in Mathematics, Signal Processing and Computer Science in Italy and Switzerland and, since 2012, he is the Director of CESMA - Centro Europeo per gli Studi in Musica e Acustica of Lugano, Switzerland.

He conducts research in applied mathematics and computer science, mainly in the areas of mathematical musicology and music information retrieval, and has authored over thirty publications including conference papers, books and articles. He serves as a referee for international journals and conferences, and he is member of scientific committees in musical informatics, sound and music computing and machine learning.

In 2018 he received the AES Board of Governors Award and, since 2019, he is Vice-president of the AES-Audio Engineering Society (in charge of the SEMEA region) and a member of the Education Committee of the AES Swiss Section. He is also a member of the IEEE Standards Association (co-author of the international standard IEEE1599-2008), serving in the Technical Committee on Computer Generated Music (TCCGM), and other associations like ACM and IMS.

He was awarded the Gold Medal for Mathematics - Silver plate of the President of the Italian Republic, the " Ivano Becchi" Prize - BML Foundation and the Nomination for the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award - Stanford University, Politecnico di Milano and University of Milan) and musical activity (including the National Organ Competition of Viterbo - CariVit Prize and the "Pierre Segond" - City of Geneva) and appears regularly as a speaker in international conferences, workshops and seminars.
